LAUNCH OF THE ANIMATORS ASSOCIATION OF GHANA

On a cloudy late September afternoon in the leafy East Cantonments neighborhood of Accra, the Preview Theatre of the National Film and television Institute played host to the launch of the Animators Association of Ghana. With a history spanning fifty years, animation began as a German initiative working with young Ghanaian designers and illustrators to produce educational animation content for Ghana Television. In 1978, formalize training of animators began with the establishment of a film training institute. Delivering her speech, Marigold Akuffo Addo, a renowned Ghanaian artist and painter, who was chairperson of the event eulogise the contribution of Edward Abebrese and David Ababio for their pioneering role in animation training in Ghana and also noted the contribution of Alex Bannerman, Samuel Quartey, Jones Abban to the development and commercializationof same. Noting the remarkable talent pool and their steadfast commitment to their craft, Marigold believed the Ghanaian animation industry is poised to expand appreciably in the next few years. In her estimation, it was only a matter of time till animation claims it rightful position as a foremost mode of communication and a key contributor of growth for Ghana’s development. Speaking on behalf of the animation association, Samuel Quartey listed targets the new association intends to achieve for the local animation industry. He identified improving the relationship between industry and academia, building proper structures to support production of animation content and directing content for both local market and export as necessary steps to take in developing the local animation industry. The association is currently working with other stakeholders in exhibiting and promoting made in Ghana animation. As an affiliate of the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts, it is working with the African Animation Network, some animation associations in the Caribbean to share experience and grow the local animation industry. With Samuel Quartey, Frank Tetteh, Jones Abban, Emmanuel Mensah and George Opare as founding members, the Animation Association of Ghana is the first major effort at bringing together animators in Ghana.

WHO CAN JOIN
Membership is opened to active practitioners of the art of animation in Ghana. You must be ananimators, illustrators, writers, directors, animation studio personnel, producers, theorists, scholars, teachers of animation, advanced students in animation or any one who has made a substantial contribution to the Ghanaian animation industry. The Association shall admit members in three(3) categories. HONORARY : Members who have distinguished themselves to the art. MEMBER: Members must be practicing animators or in professional practice ASSOCIATE: opened to students enrolled in animation programmes and apprentices.
CODE OF ETHICS
As a body of professionals, we expect that members shall respect the contributions of works and or presentations at any level. Members are required to respect the views of fellow members and shall not engage in acts to embarrass a member or bring the image of the association into disrepute. The association reserves the right to sanction a member(s) whose act or actions is deemed as an embarrassment to the association.
